Buckingham Palace has announced that Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II
passed away peacefully at Balmoral today, Thursday 8th September 2022.
THE MAYOR OF TAVISTOCK'S TRIBUTE TO HM QUEEN ELIZABETH II
We have tragically lost the only Monarch most of us have ever known during our lifetimes. Throughout her long reign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II devoted her life to the service of her people, as she promised she would when she acceded to the throne more than 70 years ago. Her reign has included difficult and turbulent times, during which the Queen has been the nation’s rock, always present and always stable, providing continuity and reassuring us all. It is impossible to overestimate how much we will miss her. The townsfolk of Tavistock send our sincere condolences to the members of the Royal Family at this sad time. Our thoughts are with you.

FLOWER LAYING ARRANGEMENTS
Should members of the public wish to lay flowers in remembrance of The Queen, the main location will be the grassed area around the War Memorial near Bedford Square.
Should this area become overly full, the secondary location will be in the Churchyard of St Eustachius’ Church, Tavistock.
We would ask that flowers are laid without cellophane or ribbon etc. as the flowers will be taken for composting at 9am on the day following The Queen’s Funeral.
We would also ask that no teddy bears or other such mementoes are laid in these areas.

Book’s of Condolence for those who wish to leave messages are available at Tavistock Town Council Offices in Drake Road, available during Office opening hours and also at St Eustachius Church, Tavistock.

PROCLAMATION
The Town Clerk of Tavistock, Carl Hearn read The Proclamation at 11.00 am, on Monday 12th September 2022 in front of the Guildhall, Tavistock. Members of the public were invited to attend.
We come together this morning following the passing of our late Sovereign, Queen Elizabeth the Second. Our sadness at this time is shared by people across the globe, as we remember with affection and gratitude the lifetime of service given by our longest-reigning Monarch. But the basis on which our monarchy is built has ensured that through the centuries the Crown has passed in an unbroken line of succession. Today’s ceremony marks the formal Proclamation to the people of the Town of Tavistock the beginning of our new King’s reign.
On Saturday the Accession Council met at St. James’s Palace to proclaim our new Sovereign. The flags which had flown at half-mast since The Queen’s death are raised briefly to their full height to mark the start of His Majesty’s reign.
The Accession Council also made an Order requiring High Sheriffs to cause the Proclamation to be read in the areas of their jurisdiction. It was that task which the High Sheriff of the County of Devon discharged yesterday and now with my humble duty I will, in the absence of the Mayor overseas, read the Proclamation to the people of Tavistock.
Ladies and Gentlemen, the Proclamation of the Accession:
A PROCLAMATION
Whereas it has pleased Almighty God to call to His Mercy our late Sovereign Lady Queen Elizabeth the Second of Blessed and Glorious Memory, by whose Decease the Crown of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is solely and rightfully come to The Prince Charles Philip Arthur George: We, therefore, the Lords Spiritual and Temporal of this Realm and Members of the House of Commons, together with other members of Her late Majesty’s Privy Council and representatives of the Realms and Territories, Aldermen and Citizens of London, and others, do now hereby with one voice and Consent of Tongue and Heart publish and proclaim that The Prince Charles Philip Arthur George is now, by the Death of our late Sovereign of Happy Memory, become our only lawful and rightful Liege Lord Charles the Third, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and of His other Realms and Territories, King, Head of the Commonwealth, Defender of the Faith, to whom we do acknowledge all Faith and Obedience with humble Affection; beseeching God by whom Kings and Queens do reign to bless His Majesty with long and happy Years to reign over us.
Given at St. James’s Palace this tenth day of September in the year of Our Lord two thousand and twenty-two.

Dignitaries, Ladies and Gentlemen, this marks the end of the formal proclamation, thank you for attending. We have today marked both with gratitude and sorrow the passing of the late Queen Elizabeth II, and with this Proclamation marked the Accession of our New King, His Majesty King Charles III and extend our best wishes and fealty to the King and Queen consort.

There will be a special Church Service held at St Eustachius’ Church, Tavistock on Sunday 18th September 2022 at 2pm, to which members of the public are invited to attend.
The Archdeacon of Plymouth, the Venerable Nick Shutt LLM, will be conducting the Service.
