Important Information
Caution – Dangerous Plants
Hemlock Water Dropwort has been identified growing along the watercourse in Bannawell Park.
We are urging the public to proceed with care when visiting the park and to avoid all contact with the plant that has been identified growing along the watercourse.
Hemlock Water Dropwort is the most poisonous plant in the UK, and whilst not poisonous to the touch, the sap from within the plant can cause a rash and blistering. More significantly the plant is highly poisonous to humans and dogs and should not be eaten. If any part of the plant is digested you should call the emergency services immediately, likewise if you suspect your dog has eaten any part of the plant including the leaves, stem, root and tubers you should visit a vet immediately.
Please do not take any risks, please do not forage for plants in this area, keep children away from the wetland and put dogs on leads.
We have installed signage throughout the park to alert the public and are currently seeking advice from a specialist contractor to advise on the appropriate control measures.
Hemlock Water Dropwort is native to the UK and is found throughout the UK in shallow water, streams, rivers and lakes. The plant is easily confused with flat leaved parsley, water parsnip or water celery.
