The Town Council owns some 35 properties and one area of farmland, most let at commercial rents. Some are Listed Buildings and one (Court Gate) is also scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
These properties were mostly bought by the Council from the Eleventh Duke of Bedford after new taxation laws were brought into force in the early 20th Century.
The rental income derived from these properties is used to defray that portion of the total Council Tax that would otherwise be payable by the residents of Tavistock to fund the services provided by the Town Council.
